The Jordan Rift Valley creates growing conditions that date palms evolved over millennia to exploit — and no amount of agricultural technique fully compensates for the absence of those conditions.

Geography: 300 Metres Below Sea Level
The Jordan Rift Valley is part of the African-Arabian Rift system — a geological fracture that runs from the Red Sea through the Dead Sea to the Sea of Galilee. Al-Karamah, where Milano Dates farms are located, sits approximately 300 metres below sea level.
This extreme depression does three things that benefit Medjool production in ways nothing else can replicate:
- Atmospheric compression at this depth increases air density, which raises daytime temperatures by 3–5°C compared to sea-level reference points.
- Rain shadow effect from the surrounding highlands means precipitation is consistently below 200mm per year — well below the threshold that promotes fungal development.
- Year-round sunshine at this latitude and elevation: over 330 days of sun annually, with no cloud cover interference during the critical August–November ripening window.
These are not incremental advantages. They are the difference between producing world-class Medjool and producing good Medjool.
The Rift Valley Microclimate
The microclimate of the Jordan Valley is best understood through its temperature extremes. During the July–September ripening period, daytime temperatures at Al-Karamah regularly reach 42–46°C, with nights dropping to 22–26°C.
This diurnal swing — the difference between day and night temperature — is critical for Medjool flavour development. During the day, the palm's photosynthesis operates at maximum rate in the intense heat, producing sugars. During the cooler nights, respiration slows and those sugars are not consumed — they concentrate in the fruit instead.
The result is a Brix reading at harvest that consistently outperforms other origins. The extreme heat also desiccates the air around the developing fruit cluster, reducing the ambient moisture that would otherwise promote surface mould during the Khalal and Rutab ripening stages.
The Jordan Valley does not just grow good Medjool. It is, arguably, where the Medjool variety evolved to be grown. The conditions are not engineered — they are geological.
Brix Levels and Sugar Density
Brix is the most objective quality metric in the date trade. It measures dissolved solids (primarily sugars) in the fruit flesh, expressed as degrees (°Bx). Higher Brix means more natural sweetness, more intense flavour, and — because sugar is a natural preservative — longer shelf life.
Jordan Valley Medjool at peak harvest tests at 68–72° Brix. This compares to:

The Jordan Rift Valley aquifer is one of the region's most mineral-rich groundwater sources. Irrigation water drawn from this aquifer contains elevated concentrations of potassium, magnesium, and calcium — minerals that are directly absorbed by date palms and contribute to fruit density and skin integrity.
The alluvial soils of the Jordan Valley floor are deep and well-draining, with a composition suited to the fibrous root systems of mature date palms. Unlike sandy desert soils in other producing regions, the Jordan Valley loam retains enough structure to anchor root systems while draining excess irrigation water efficiently — preventing the waterlogging that causes root rot in established orchards.
Farms at Al-Karamah have been cultivating date palms on this same soil for generations. Mature palms (15–25 years old) produce measurably superior fruit compared to young orchards in newer production regions — their root systems are deep enough to access groundwater at consistent mineral concentrations regardless of surface irrigation variation.
Harvest Timing and Hand-Picking
Jordan Valley Medjool is harvested from September to November, with the peak window typically running through October. This is when Brix is at maximum and moisture content settles into the optimal 18–24% range for commercial shelf life.
All Medjool at our Al-Karamah operation is hand-harvested. Mechanical harvesting — used in some Californian orchards to reduce labour costs — causes bruising at the point of contact and accelerates moisture loss in the hours after separation. Hand-picking allows selective harvest: fruit clusters are assessed for ripeness before removal, and individual fruits within a cluster that are not yet at peak Rutab stage are left for a second pass.
This selective approach produces higher-Brix, more uniform product per harvest — but it requires significantly more skilled labour hours per tonne than mechanised alternatives. That labour cost is reflected in the final price per kilogram, and it is the primary reason Jordan Valley hand-harvested Medjool costs more than mechanically-harvested production from other origins.

Jordan Valley Medjool commands a higher per-kilogram price than Californian or Moroccan product. Premium supermarkets, high-end food service, and specialty health food retailers can typically pass this price to consumers. Industrial buyers and mainstream food manufacturers often cannot — and may be better served by Californian or Moroccan Medjool for their cost structure.
